The only sound in the moonlit bedroom was an old Earth song playing in the background. Eliza had liked the "quiet retro-rock" music before and after it was trendy for the kids. She bought some of the collections for her private enjoyment, and eventually it grew on Zach as well -- mainly because it didn't split his eardrums, unlike the "modern" stuff. The recordings had been playing over and over for hours, ever since he turned them on after coming home at sunset.
Look into my eyes -- you will see
What you mean to me
Search your heart -- search your soul
And when you find me there, you'll search no more
Zach studied the framed picture of Eliza as he sat on their bed. He still wore his uniform pants. The badge and lazer pistol sat on a small table nearby. Everything else had been tossed in the closet absentmindedly. Night had fallen long ago. The whole house was dark, with GV being unusually quiet. The kids were spending their vacations with friends.
Millions of stars were scattered like brilliant diamonds across the velvet heavens, but the Ranger Captain turned a blind eye to their beauty. It hurt too much, knowing that she was lost somewhere among them.
Don't tell me it's not worth tryin' for
You can't tell me it's not worth dyin' for
You know it's true
Everything I do -- I do it for you
Various rescue attempts passed quickly through his mind, making him wince. Every time the Series Fives took one step forward to rescue Eliza's psychocrystal, the Queen conjured up ten more steps in their path.
Look into your heart -- you will find
There's nothin' there to hide
Take me as I am -- take my life!
I would give it all, I would sacrifice!
This last time, while rushing blindly into the trap, he very nearly did sacrifice his life for her. Given the chance, he would do it again. Eliza should have been the one who was rescued, not me.
Don't tell me it's not worth fightin' for
I can't help it, there's nothin' I want more
You know it's true
Everything I do -- I do it for you! Ohhh, yeah!
Eliza's face entered his thoughts, chasing the darkness away.
There's no love -- like your love
And no other -- could give more love
There's nowhere -- unless you're there!
All the time -- all the way!
Her voice echoed in his memory. "Zachary, my husband, I miss you so! You must be strong." He had forgotten the pain of having his soul torn out for one glorious moment as that vision of her played across his mind's eye. Her face became sadder and wiser. "Our spirits will always be one." He wanted to reach out, embrace his wife... but then the rest of his energy was drained into the psychocrystal and he fell comatose.
His rescue from the Queen's Asteroid had been a blur. Even when Walsh handed him back his badge at the Cryocrypt this afternoon, he felt numb. "We'll free her one day," Zach had quietly promised as he put it back on.
Ohhh, you can't tell me it's not worth tryin' for!
I can't help it! There's nothin' I want more!
Yeah, we'll fight for you! I'd lie for you!
Walk the world for you -- Yeah, I'd die for you...
His blue eyes darkened with resolve as his fingers tightened on the frame. I won't give up, Eliza. I'll find your psychocrystal if it takes the rest of my life, he silently repeated the vow.
You know it's true
Everything I do -- I do it for you
Placing the picture back on the table, he traced his fingers over her image once more before going to bed. Sleep soon claimed his tired body.
For the first time in a long while, his dreams were peaceful. The details eluded him upon awakening, but he did remember that they showed Eliza finally coming home. "Hang on, Eliza," Zach softly whispered, watching as the first rays of dawn streaked through the sky.
